By Pablo Larraín | A couple deals with the aftermath of an adoption that goes awry as their household falls apart
After a shocking incident upends her family life and marriage to a tempestuous choreographer, Ema, a dancer, sets out on an odyssey of personal liberation. Husband and wife blame each other for the incident and its fallout, trading barbs across the dancefloor as their relationship frays, publicly and savagely. Ema’s scorched-earth approach to tearing down her marriage and rebuilding her life however she damn well pleases, teases with bold visual statements and is thrillingly primal.
« Pablo Larrain is the great discombobulator of modern cinema, a master of black jokes, a spinner of transgressive tales. He makes work that inhabits a social landscape of strangeness, where conversations jump from the candid to the downright inappropriate and characters remain a mystery, sometimes even to themselves. We wouldn’t want to live in the world Larrain shows us. But his films are so good they convince us that we do. » The Guardian ****
